Hope for India - PHASE II Update

Daniel Williamson

“India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grandmother of tradition”, wrote Mark Twain. It’s true. While India is one of the most culturally, religiously and socio-economically diverse nations in the world, its cultural richness and inherent mystique also make it one of the most beautiful nations one can visit. Nevertheless, despite its captivating beauty, the nation as a whole bears the tragic marks of the fall, evident in the caste system and public idolatry. It has been said, “Oh, we want a new breed of men before India can be cleansed of her disease.”[1] India is not only scarred by the consequences of the caste system, it is plagued by disease and poverty where the life of many is undervalued and often overlooked.

The Speaking Louder Team has recently had the opportunity to travel to the Imperial nation of India with the intent of investing in a new breed of men and women whose hearts are being stirred by God to bring a change to the spiritual fabric of their nation.

The prophet Isaiah wrote, “Into the darkness a light has shined.” The darkness that resides upon this beautiful nation cannot be understated as India is one the world’s foremost destinations for sex traffickers and female infanticide. Nevertheless, it is into this darkness that a great Gospel light is shining as both men and women are steadfastly praying and laboring for a radical move of God to take place within their borders.

Jeremy and the rest of the Speaking Louder team is privileged to play a very small part in this work and to serve as an answer to many prayers.

Hope for India- Phase II

In the beginning of August, the Speaking Louder Team spent nearly two weeks meeting with many pastors from the city of Chennai, planning, preparing and praying for the Hope for India event that will take place in January 2016. During our time there, we conducted a pastors’ conference with more than one hundred attending pastors, reminding them of the importance of discipleship and laying groundwork for our discipleship and follow-up effort that will accompany our January event. By the grace of God, the event was a huge success and we were invited back to India next year to host another pastor’s conference in Chennai. Since our departure, it has become clear that a conference with this focus addressed an important topic and a deep need in the religious culture of India. The feedback we received from numerous pastors was all very encouraging and positive.

An important part of the Speaking Louder vision is to demonstrate the implications of the Gospel through practical acts of service; therefore Speaking Louder is intimately involved in such activities like well drilling projects and house rebuilding adventures in a greatly impoverished leper colony outside Chennai. Additionally, we have partnered with an indigenous ministry that is working to repair the roofs on many houses that have become dilapidated and made living conditions barely survivable.

The scope of our Hope for India efforts reaches far beyond the city of Chennai, but also includes another major metropolis, Bangalore. In Bangalore we are working with leaders from Calvary Chapel Trust, a ministry that cares for HIV positive children of all ages, providing them both the spiritual and medical resources required to live a full and satisfying life. All these opportunities are platforms we believe God has provided for us to preach the message of our ministry, the Gospel.

At the end of our time in India we celebrated with local leaders and pastors the wonderful works that we believe God is doing and wants to do in India. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” We invite each of you to pray with us and for us as Speaking Louder takes this step of faith to serve the brethren in India.

Declaring the hope of Jesus!

Daniel Williamson

The world as we know it is continuing to unravel and reveal the deep levels of hopelessness and brokenness resulting from the fall in the book of beginnings. Mankind, now living east of Eden, is in a search, looking both high and low, beneath every rock and behind every tree, for happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment.

Pop-culture has sold the world happiness wrapped in the garments of beauty, wealth and popularity, but at its core is a destructive lie. It’s pseudo-happiness at the expense of one’s soul. As it turns out, the further we pursue happiness, the more broken we become and the more calloused our hearts grow. The pursuit of happiness, however, is not the problem. French philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascale writes, “All men seek happiness, this is the motive of every action of every man, even those who hang themselves.” It is the object of our happiness where we go wrong.

The tragedy is that, as a substitute for God, we have pursued happiness in the creation rather than the Creator. The more we do this, the more broken our lives become and the more poignant our hopelessness stings. This is the ruin and plight of all men.

After winning key battles, the Greeks sent out heralds, also called evangelists, to announce the good news that they were no longer Persian slaves but free citizens of the kingdom. The saddening reality is that we are all slaves in need of good news. The good news that we are all in need of is news of deliverance.

Only in this backdrop of darkness and death does the light and hope of Christ shine brightly. Jesus arrives into the world declaring,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18, ESV)

The word Gospel translates to news that brings joy. But this isn’t just any news; it is news that changes a life forever. Jesus, God’s son, fully God and fully man, enters into our brokenness to bring “good news” that will change a life forever. Jesus comes to take what we deserve and to give us what only He deserves. He lays down His life so that we might have life. The righteousness that God requires can only come from God through Jesus Christ, by faith in the finished work of Christ. Only then do we experience the joy, happiness and satisfaction that we were created to experience. St. Augustine of Hippo writes, “You made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

At Speaking Louder, the mission of our ministry is to declare the good news of the hope of Jesus Christ; therefore the message of our ministry is the Gospel.
